AstraGuide: AI Mission Assistant for Deep-Space Operations
Inspiration
When astronauts travel to Mars, communication with Earth comes with a 13-minute delay. In an emergency, waiting for ground control isn’t an option. We wanted to create a system that could provide instant, reliable, and intelligent guidance — even when help from Earth isn’t available.
What It Does
AstraGuide is an AI mission assistant that interprets shuttle manuals and operational data to deliver real-time, context-aware support to astronauts. It uses Vertex AI to analyze thousands of pages of NASA manuals, converting complex technical language into clear, actionable instructions. Whether it’s diagnosing a system anomaly or walking through a checklist, AstraGuide provides immediate procedural guidance to keep missions safe and on track.
How We Built It
We processed and embedded hundreds of PDF manuals using Vertex AI’s document intelligence and retrieval models. Then, we built a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system that allows AstraGuide to respond with accurate, source-cited information drawn directly from verified manuals. The front-end simulates real-time operations, including communication delay scenarios.
Challenges We Ran Into
Parsing complex aerospace PDFs and ensuring the AI’s responses remained technically accurate were major hurdles. We had to fine-tune our pipeline to handle technical terminology, diagrams, and multi-step procedures without losing context.
Accomplishments We’re Proud Of
Successfully integrated Vertex AI to process and reason over real shuttle documentation
Built a working prototype that simulates 13-minute delayed communication
Created an AI co-pilot that can guide astronauts through real mission procedures autonomously
What We Learned
AI can play a major role in autonomous space operations — but reliability and interpretability are key. Building trust in AI decision support requires both transparency and rigorous data grounding.
What’s Next
We plan to integrate live telemetry data and expand AstraGuide’s knowledge base to support spacecraft beyond the Shuttle — paving the way for AI-assisted Mars missions and fully autonomous deep-space navigation.
