Inspiration

An asthma attack can be a frightening and life-threatening experience for those affected. Globally, it was estimated to cause approximately 461,000 deaths in 2019. Engaging with asthma patient communities and hearing their stories and struggles firsthand inspired us to take action and develop some wearable sensors that would monitor breathing patterns and lung function and alert you when pollution, such as smog, is about to take its toll on your heart or lungs. Their feedback and needs became the driving force behind our project.

What it does

It continuously monitors the vitals of the patient and alerts whenever it reaches any case of risk. It also has a panic button which the patient can use at emergency situation for help from others.

How we built it

Building a wearable asthma attack alert device require the following key steps:- First of all we should determine the monitoring metrics and emergency triggers of the device. Choose the microcontrollers, sensors and wireless modules. Power management and a data handling system should be set up. Implementation of storage and analysis capabilities for history tracking. Create an alert system for emergency contacts via various channels. Then the device is enables with internet or smartphone connectivity. Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and safety standards. Prototypes are built and user feedbacks are collected for improvements. Make sure data security and privacy is prioritized. Distribute devices and monitor performance for timely alerts and data accuracy.

Challenges we ran into

Building this device is tough. We need to make a small and user-friendly device, need accurate health measurements, long-lasting battery, and smart software. It should keep user info safe. Making it affordable and helping people use it is important. Also coordinating with emergency services and healthcare providers to respond effectively to alerts requires planning and collaboration.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We have built a user-friendly accurate emergency alert device for asthma patients which benefits them a lot. This align with our mission to provide an effective and accessible solution for asthma management , which will ultimately improve the well being of the users themselves and the loved ones of the users.

What we learned

Our journey in developing a wearable asthma monitoring device has been a valuable learning experience. Throughout this project, we've gained several important insights and lessons that have shaped our understanding of healthcare technology and its impact. We've deepened our understanding of data privacy and security in healthcare. The project has exposed us to the real-world challenges that patients and healthcare systems face in managing chronic conditions like asthma.

What's next for Asthma Monitoring and Alerting Sensor - AMA Sensor

'AMA sensors,' is an exciting journey toward further improving the lives of asthma patients. We plan to enhance the device's features like incorporating more sensors for a comprehensive health assessment, including environmental sensors for tracking air quality and allergen levels. We also want to make our device more user friendly for disabled people.
