Inspiration
AssistHub was designed by two hackers to be convenient and fun in the process. The two of us always communicate on discord almost everyday with other friends. Funny enough, some of us also work at the same job location. We all were tired of constantly asking each other's schedules and looking at zoomed-in pictures. To organize our work schedules as well as looking forward to working the same shifts, we decided to design a discord bot in order to do this job for us.
What it does
AssistHub was mainly designed to organize your monthly work schedule. Although it is called "work schedule", it is not limited to only this option. As this schedule can be used for school, appointments, parties, and other events.
How we built it
AssistHub was built through the Python programming language as well an API that Discord offers openly. Through installing the discord.py library, we were able to freely explore and utilize numerous features from the Discord API.
Challenges we ran into
Challenges we ran into while building our Discord bot was the amount of ideas we wanted to implement into the bot. However with only two members, we felt that we had to choose the quality of our program over the quantity of functions. Discord bots are also predominantly coded more so in the Python language over others. As we followed the trend, one of us had to quickly learn the Python language for this project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The two of us felt accomplished when we were able to get AssistHub to complete its main task. As this is both our first discord bot, we felt that this bot got our foot in the door.
What we learned
The team learned a lot through our time during Hack the North. One of us gained knowledge of a new coding language, and both of us got to explore an API for a very popular application. There was also a little bit of dabbling in the command prompt terminal where we installed the discord.py package using pip.
What's next for AssistHub
We plan to expand this bot for both personal business and public use. Personal use may include our private server being able to play music as public music bots have been taken down recently. Public uses may include mini-games for some stress relief.
