Inspiration

While we were researching datasets from the CDC, we realized that there was a crisis between adolescents and their overall well-being, including physical and mental health, due to a lack of healthy eating. We took this as an opportunity to make it easier for users to find recipes that are most beneficial for their health.

What it does

The user is provided with a checklist of various wellness issues. They can check off which symptoms they are experiencing, and the web app provides recipes with ingredients that are known to directly help with their current health symptoms.

How we built it

  • HTML, React (JavaScript), CSS, Spoonacular API

Challenges we ran into

As this was our first-ever experience with web development, we struggled with figuring out where to start. This was our first time using JavaScript and HTML. We struggled to learn how to use React to help us add interactive features within our web app at first, but we ultimately got it to work. This was also our first time using APIs, so we had to spend time to research which APIs we needed to use, and how to access the data that we needed from them. We also originally found difficulty in having a collaborative coding environment, but we learned to use VSCode Live Sharing to edit our files within the shared project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud that we were able to begin learning how to use JavaScript and HTML within our first hackathon. As this was our first web development, we are pleased that our collaboration produced a web app with visible results.

What we learned

We learned how to use React, JavaScript and HTML for the first time. We also learned how to make API calls.

What's next for Wellness Recipe Assistant

The next thing we would look into for Wellness Recipe Assistant is implementing dietary restrictions onto the recipe finder. Additionally, we would add a difficulty level selector for the recipes, ranging from easy to hard, so that those who don't like cooking as much can still be able to find easy, healthy recipes.
