ASLephant: The Fun, Free Way to Learn ASL! 🐘

Inspiration 🧠💡

Learning a new language can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be! ASLephant was born when our school decided to not provide an ASL course after months of deliberation, and this was saddening. Outside resources are either too complex, too expensive, or too dry. We wanted to change that and create an engaging, beginner-friendly way to learn ASL that’s completely free and accessible to everyone.

What it does 👀🔍

ASLephant makes learning ASL simple and enjoyable through interactive flashcards and engaging activities. Starting the level tree from the top leverages top-down processing, where learners first grasp the big picture or advanced concepts, allowing their brains to contextualize and break down details more efficiently. When the level is done, there's a short quiz. This way, ASLephant turns language learning into an adventure rather than a chore.

How we built it 📚🌈

We used Code.orgs App Lab, and used Canva for UI design. To make it available for download, we used MIT app inventor.

Challenges we ran into 🚧❌

Finding a no-code platform that allowed APK export was a challenge, especially since we needed something 100% free. Without an Android device for testing, we had to get creative in ensuring the app worked smoothly. Additionally, designing an interface that was both engaging and beginner-friendly required a lot of trial and error.

Accomplishments that we're proud of 🌟🏆

We successfully built an ASL learning app without writing crazy, complex code! ASLephant is easy to use, visually appealing, and most importantly free for anyone who wants to learn ASL. Overcoming technical limitations and sticking to our goal of accessibility makes this a huge win.

What we learned ✅🎉

Through this process, we learned that determination and creativity can overcome technical challenges. Even with limitations, we can make things work and build something meaningful. We also deepened our appreciation for ASL and the importance of making language learning inclusive.

What's next for ASLephant 🤟🐘

We would like to add more flashcards, expand learning activities, and incorporate community features to connect learners. In the future, we’d love to introduce animations or video demonstrations to make learning even more immersive. ASLephant wants to be the go-to free resource for ASL beginners everywhere!
