Project Story: Charles River Museum: A Digital Revival
The Problem: Hidden Gem, Confusing Path
The Charles River Museum holds the "Big Story" of America's first textile mill but was struggling with "Small Exposure" due to two critical pain points:
- Poor Navigation:
- Digital: The original website was cluttered, confusing, and lacked a clear aesthetic.
- Physical: GPS directs visitors to a confusing back entrance, forcing staff to manually guide guests to the correct parking, leading to a "Lost Customer Tax."
- Undervaluation: The site failed to promote key offerings like the maker space (3D printing, CNC) and free workshops, making the museum seem smaller than its "huge story."
Our Solution: A Clear Path Forward
We executed a comprehensive digital overhaul to drive engagement and physical visits:
| Area | Key Features Implemented |
|---|---|
| Website | Reduced 9 drop-down menus to a clean, modern layout. |
| Arrival | Highlighted the parking issue on the homepage and created a dedicated Directions page with visual guides to the correct entrance. |
| Content | Simplified text-heavy pages and clearly organized information on the maker space and events. |
| Support | Redesigned the Support page to highlight donation impact and attract high-value corporate sponsorships. |
Prospective Impact
The redesign removes barriers and transforms the museum's identity:
- 15-20% Increase in Traffic: By eliminating the GPS/parking confusion, lost customers are converted into paying visitors.
- The Innovation Pipeline: The maker space, now clearly promoted, becomes a community hub, generating media buzz and attracting a new generation of students and innovators.
- Abolition of the "Lost Customer Tax": The museum's reputation improves, making it a reliable, high-value destination and increasing its appeal as an event venue.
