Inspiration

More of our signups were saying they found us through ChatGPT, or that Perplexity recommended us, while our Google traffic stayed flat and clicks fell because of AI Overviews. There was no Search Console for AI answers, so we were flying blind on how the models talked about our product.

What it does

AskAiRank tracks how often large language models mention your brand when buyers ask for a tool like yours. It runs buyer style prompts against ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and more on a schedule, then parses each answer for whether you are mentioned, in what position, with what sentiment, and which pages the model cites as sources. You get a visibility score per model, a side by side comparison with competitors, and an alert when your visibility drops.

How I built it

The frontend is Next.js and React with Tailwind and Shadcn UI. A Python worker layer calls each LLM provider, and a parsing layer detects mentions, positions and citations in the raw answers. Everything runs on a self hosted Postgres stack with Drizzle, deployed to a dedicated server through GitHub Actions.

Challenges I ran into

The hardest part is parsing free form model answers reliably. Models phrase the same recommendation ten different ways, so mention and position detection has to be robust to wording, typos and partial names without over counting. Keeping cost under control across many prompts and providers took careful batching and caching.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Onboarding takes a couple of minutes. You paste your domain, we detect your category, generate the prompts for you, and suggest competitors to track from a database of thousands of tools. The visibility score turns a vague worry into a number founders can actually move.

What I learned

Most founders assume they are in the AI answer and are surprised to find they are not, or that a competitor sits above them. Measuring it changes behavior. I also learned how quickly AI discovery is becoming a real acquisition channel that nobody has instrumentation for yet.
