MedAtlas AI: A Precision Healthcare Assistant for Rare Disease Diagnosis and Management
Inspiration ๐
The inspiration for MedAtlas AI came from the challenges medical practitioners face when diagnosing and treating rare diseases. These conditions are often overlooked or misdiagnosed due to the lack of centralized, accessible knowledge. Doctors must sift through large amounts of literature, case studies, and clinical trial data, which is time-consuming and prone to human error. By leveraging AI ๐ค, we aimed to provide a real-time, evidence-based assistant that could assist healthcare professionals in making accurate diagnoses and treatment decisions for rare diseases.
What it does ๐ฉบ
MedAtlas AI is a Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG)-powered healthcare assistant designed to assist medical practitioners in diagnosing and managing rare diseases. The platform:
- Retrieves relevant medical literature and clinical case studies using Snowflake Cortex Search ๐.
- Generates context-aware, actionable recommendations for diagnosis and treatment with Mistral LLM ๐ก.
- Offers a Streamlit-based interface for easy interaction, allowing users to input patient symptoms and get real-time insights ๐ฅ๏ธ.
- Prevents hallucinations by grounding answers with relevant documents, ensuring accuracy and reliability โ .
- Tracks patient history and offers personalized treatment recommendations based on medical research ๐.
How we built it ๐ ๏ธ
- Snowflake Cortex Search was used to index and retrieve medical literature, clinical trial data, and rare disease case studies. We utilized its hybrid search engine to ensure both semantic and lexical similarity for accurate retrieval.
- Mistral LLM was implemented to generate actionable recommendations and insights based on the retrieved documents.
- Streamlit served as the front-end framework, allowing us to build an intuitive dashboard where doctors could easily query the system and interact with patient data.
- The backend was powered by Snowflake serverless functions, handling the processing of queries and generation of responses.
Challenges we ran into โ ๏ธ
- One of the biggest challenges was ensuring that the system could handle complex medical queries while grounding responses in relevant documents. Mistralโs LLM needed to be carefully fine-tuned to provide accurate and context-aware answers.
- Integrating Snowflake Cortex Searchโs hybrid retrieval system with the LLM to ensure seamless interaction was another challenge. We had to carefully balance the retrieval of semantically relevant documents and the generation of accurate responses based on them.
- Streamlitโs integration with Snowflake and Mistral LLM required additional customization to ensure smooth user experience and real-time results.
Accomplishments that we're proud of ๐
- We successfully built a functional prototype of MedAtlas AI that could accurately retrieve relevant medical literature and provide context-aware, actionable insights for rare disease diagnosis.
- The Streamlit dashboard allows for seamless interaction and provides a user-friendly interface for medical professionals.
- The RAG framework greatly improved the relevance of the responses, ensuring that the system provides precise and actionable information.
What we learned ๐
- We learned how to leverage the full capabilities of Snowflake Cortex Search, combining semantic and lexical search to retrieve highly relevant documents.
- We gained deep insight into Mistral LLM and how to use it effectively to generate accurate, context-aware responses for specialized domains like healthcare.
- We learned how to integrate multiple tools into a cohesive end-to-end application, handling both backend data processing and frontend user interaction seamlessly.
What's next for MedAtlas AI: Precision Healthcare for Rare Diseases ๐
- Scaling the application to support additional rare diseases and expanding the dataset to include more diverse medical literature and case studies.
- Real-time document updates: Automating the ingestion of new research papers, clinical trials, and medical reports to keep the system up-to-date ๐.
- Expanding the user base by offering multilingual support for global healthcare providers ๐.
- Implementing collaborative features, allowing healthcare professionals to share insights and case studies, fostering a community-driven approach to rare disease management ๐ค.
