Inspiration
Reddit is home to millions of communities where users share opinions, ideas, and solutions. However, creating structured polls and votes on subreddits often feels limited and unengaging. Inspired by the need for better ways to crowdsource answers and spark discussions, I envisioned Ask What?, a tool that combines creativity with simplicity for richer interactions on Reddit.
What it does
Ask What? allows Reddit users to:
- Create custom posts with questions and images.
- Set a maximum number of answers or votes.
- Specify a time limit for participation.
How we built it
- Frontend: Built with [Framework/Tools Used], ensuring a smooth and intuitive user experience for creating and managing polls.
- Backend: Integrated directly with Reddit’s API to handle post creation, image uploads, and user interactions.
- Storage: Leveraged Reddit’s infrastructure to store all images and data, ensuring no external storage is used.
Challenges we ran into
- Understanding Reddit’s API: As a first-time user of Reddit’s API, navigating its documentation and permissions was a learning curve.
- Ensuring Privacy: Designing the app to avoid collecting user data required creative problem-solving and strict adherence to best practices.
- UI/UX Optimization: Balancing simplicity with feature-rich options like time limits and image uploads was challenging but rewarding.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Building a privacy-first app that respects Redditors’ data and integrates seamlessly with subreddits.
- Delivering a unique tool that encourages community engagement in a creative and meaningful way.
- Overcoming technical hurdles to develop a feature-rich app in a limited timeframe.
What we learned
- How to work with Reddit’s API to create innovative tools for its platform.
- The importance of privacy-conscious design in building trust with users.
- Strategies for managing time effectively during a hackathon to deliver a functional and polished product.
