Inspiration
AI tools like ChatGPT are great for getting quick answers, but they don’t really help us learn. They give instant responses without requiring deep thinking, making it easy to skip the struggle that actually builds understanding. I wanted to create something that encourages curiosity, helps break down complex topics, and reinforces learning through active recall. Inspired by Josh Waitzkin’s Most Important Question (MIQ) process and research on effective learning, askMiqy was born.
What it does
askMiqy helps you ask better questions, explore knowledge, and retain what you learn. It guides users to break down big questions into smaller ones, structure information into flashcards, and test themselves using active recall. You can review questions from both angles (question → answer, answer → question), and even have AI-driven conversations to reinforce understanding. The goal is to turn passive reading into active learning.
How we built it
The core of askMiqy is a flashcard-based learning system with AI enhancements. Built with NextJS and Express on Replit , ElevenLabs for conversational AI, and OpenAI for LLM tasks like generating smart question and answers, chat and active recall techniques. The AI helps break down concepts, while the app allows users to organize, review, and refine their knowledge over time.
Challenges
- Over thinking and Complexity – Its easy to want to build everything. I wanted to walk out of this weekend with one or two main features built and shipped so others could give it a try.
- Balancing AI assistance with real learning – AI can do a lot, but I had to make sure it wasn’t just spoon-feeding answers.
- Designing a good question flow – Helping users refine their questions without making the process feel tedious.
- Time constraints – Building everything in a short timeframe while ensuring the app was functional and useful.
Accomplishments
- Going from idea to a working product by the end of this hackathon
- Leveraging on ElevenLabs for audio to text and conversational AI for the first time
- Creating and deploying the entire project on Replit.
What's next for Ask Miqy
- Smarter AI-generated flashcards based on how well you answer.
- Adding multimedia (images, AI-generated videos) for better memory retention.
- Expanding to different learning styles (typing vs. speaking vs. hands-on interaction).
- Testing it with real students and seeing how they use it.
At the end of the day, the goal is simple: help people learn better by asking better questions.
