Inspiration
We first decided to create this website around a time where Asian American hate crimes were increasing rapidly due to COVID-19. At the time, we had many ideas of how to try and mitigate hate crimes in the Bay Area, but after time went on, we decided that one of the most important parts of hate crime mitigation were to try and avoid areas with increased racism. As a result, we banded together to create a Asian Hate Crime Map in hopes that it would help Asians find safe places to live peacefully.
What it does
Our website has a map that ranks cities in the Bay Area from 1-4, based on how intensive the hate crimes in the area are. 1 would be shown as a light color indicating that the city is relatively safe, while a 4 would indicate that the area is dangerous.
How we built it
- We first made our website on google sheets, making sure we provided links and information to contact us and stay safe. 2.Next we thoroughly researched Asian American hate crime data, asking all available sources, including getting information from US officials such as US senators. 3.Lastly, we coded our data into a map that showed colors of low hate crime rates-light colors, to high hate crime rates-dark colors. ## Challenges we ran into One of the main challenges we ran into was coding in areas of the map. We began, not knowing how to code colors in to fill an area, but we researched how to fix this problem, and in the end we were able to accomplish the challenge and learn a lot of new information with it as well! ## Accomplishments that we're proud of We're proud of how well we communicated and how much we learned. One of our main goals with this project was to learn and grow from our mistakes, and we think we accomplished this! ## What we learned While working on this project we not only learned more coding but we also learned how to communicate with our teammates in order to ensure that we got the best product out of our work. ## What's next for Asian Hate Crime Map We're looking to expand our website, to help more Asian Americans in the USA! We're looking to encode information of hate crime rates in other areas of the United States.
