Inspiration

As a high schooler, I wanted to see how far I could get building a full pixel-art game from scratch — not just following a tutorial, but designing my own concepts, sprites, and mechanics, using AI tools as a genuine development partner rather than a shortcut.

What it does

A 2D pixel-art action game featuring an original dragon-knight world, with real-time combat, health/boss bars, and hand-designed enemy and character sprites (including an original ancient dragon boss design). The game is still in active testing and development.

How I built it

I designed all the concepts, sprites, and game logic myself, using Cursor and ChatGPT throughout the process — from generating and refining pixel art assets to writing and debugging the game's JavaScript logic in the browser. It's a from-scratch project built iteratively rather than from a template or existing framework.

Challenges I ran into

Coordinating art asset generation with actual gameplay code was the biggest challenge — getting sprites, hitboxes, and game feel to line up took a lot of back-and-forth iteration. As a solo, self-taught project, debugging game logic without a formal game-dev background meant leaning heavily on AI assistance to understand and fix issues as they came up.

What's next

Continuing to polish combat mechanics, add more enemy variety, and move the project from "messy and slow" toward something more complete and shareable.
