Inspiration
With obesity being a significant health crisis in America, we saw this hackathon as the perfect opportunity to tackle the issue. NutriLens was born out of a desire to make health tracking accessible, convenient, and effective.
What It Does
NutriLens lets you snap a photo of your meals, set dietary goals, and track your progress over time. Each photo is analyzed, categorized, and broken down into ingredients, helping you visualize and manage your nutrition goals with ease.
How We Built It
We used Next.js for the interactive frontend, providing a seamless user experience. The backend is powered by Django, which serves as a REST API to process and store data. By integrating public APIs and large language models (LLMs), we gather detailed information about each food item, securely storing it in our database.
Challenges We Ran Into
One major challenge was ensuring the database could handle our queries efficiently and reliably. Fine-tuning database interactions was essential to ensure the app ran smoothly.
Accomplishments We’re Proud Of
We’re proud of bringing our vision to life! NutriLens met all our intended goals, providing a powerful tool for dietary tracking and analysis.
What We Learned
This project taught us how to leverage a variety of APIs to seamlessly integrate multiple functionalities. The experience sharpened our skills in both frontend and backend development.
What’s Next for NutriLens
NutriLens is just getting started! We aim to add privacy policies, terms of use, and address technical challenges for a polished user experience. While the hackathon time limit posed challenges, we look forward to refining and expanding on our work.
