Inspiration
- Vision of universal mobility.
- Inspired by individuals with impairments.
- Personalized journeys based on health status.
No one should suffer unnecessary obstacles in a world full of travels. Our map application represents a vision of a world where mobility is universal rather than selective. We were inspired by the perseverance of those with impairments, whose pathways frequently lack accessible routes. Existing programs, such as Google Maps, provide 'Accessible Places,' but we go a step further. Our app allows users to personalize their journeys based on their health status.
What it does
- Provides real-time, personalized route recommendations.
- User-friendly interface.
- Customizable for specific needs.
- Collects data from multiple sources.
- Integrates public transportation for wheelchair-friendly routes.
Our WowWay provides personalized, real-time route recommendations based on the user’s health conditions. It has a user-friendly interface and connects with assistive technology, as well as the ability to be customized for particular needs. The application collects data from multiple sources to ensure the accuracy of accessible information and incorporates public transportation integration for wheelchair-friendly routes, increasing the mobility and independence of people with impairments. To summarize, it is a comprehensive tool that enables users to browse with ease and confidence, regardless of their individual health needs.
How we built it
- Comprehensive navigation tool for people with disabilities.
- Personalized route recommendations.
- Real-time road condition information.
- Data aggregation from various sources.
Our map application is a comprehensive and inclusive navigation tool developed to empower people with disabilities. It goes beyond existing solutions by giving individualized route recommendations based on users' specific health problems, allowing them to avoid barriers such as steep hills and stairs or obtaining specialized cues for their sensory needs. The map provides real-time information on road conditions and combines smoothly with assistive technology, making it accessible and user-friendly. Furthermore, the app collects data from many sources, including government-provided accessibility data, GIS, and elevation data, ensuring that users have the most up-to-date and accurate information regarding accessible routes and services.
Challenges we ran into
- Complex UI design for people with disabilities.
- Gathering diverse and accurate data.
- Data quality and real-time accuracy.
- App integration, continuous improvement, and data security.
During the development of our map application, we encountered several notable challenges. First, crafting a user interface (UI) that caters to the unique needs of our focus group proved to be a complex task. We strived to ensure that individuals with disabilities could navigate the app effortlessly, which necessitated extensive testing and iterations to achieve a design that was both intuitive and accessible. Second, gathering diverse and accurate data from various sources was a formidable challenge, as it involved coordinating with government agencies, open data initiatives, and local disability organizations. Ensuring the quality and real-time accuracy of this data was crucial to the app's effectiveness. Third, we faced other challenges related to app integration, continuous improvement, and maintaining data security and user privacy. Overcoming these challenges demanded a holistic approach, combining technical expertise with collaboration, innovation, and a strong commitment to making our app a valuable and inclusive resource for our users with disabilities.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Bringing accessibility to people's lives.
- A symbol of inclusivity.
We are proud of how our product can bring an accessible life to people. Our commitment is to create a more accessible world. We are proud of creating a tool that enables users to browse with ease and confidence, regardless of their individual health needs. Our product is a symbol of inclusivity and a step forward in making the world more accessible for everyone.
What we learned
- Importance of fairness and inclusivity.
- Setting practical goals.
- Avoiding feature overload.
During our two-day hackathon, we gained valuable insights in both product development and teamwork.
First, we recognized the importance of fairness when it comes to designing and building our product. It's crucial to avoid any bias and ensure that our solution is fair and inclusive for all users.
We also came to understand that setting ambitious goals is great, but it's equally important to be practical, especially when working under time constraints. Focusing on making our product best for specific user groups and how our content can effectively solve the problem, rather than aiming for a broad audience and a variety of issues, proved to be more effective.
Moreover, we learned that overloading our product with too many features can confuse and overwhelm users. Simplifying the user experience and making our user interface easy to understand is essential to ensure that the product remains user-friendly and accessible.
What's next
- Enhancing product further.
- User interviews and usability testing.
- Exploring additional features.
Looking ahead, we're excited about what's coming next. Our primary goal is to continue enhancing our product to improve people's lives further. To achieve this, we plan to reach out to our users and conduct brief interviews to gain a better understanding of their daily challenges and travel experiences. This will help us address their specific needs and difficulties.
Additionally, we're committed to conducting usability testing to ensure that our product is easy to navigate without causing confusion or a long learning curve for users.
Furthermore, we've also explored some potential enhancements to the user's road guide experience, such as incorporating features like SOS functionality, showing busy or crowded routes providing weather information, and more. We'll carefully consider whether to implement these features based on the data and insights we gather during our user interviews and testing.
