Elevator Pitch - please provide a two-sentence description of your business idea that should outline the problem you are trying to solve and your proposed solution. Production of ascites is common in patients diagnosed with end stage liver disease. These patients require frequent visits to the hospital for management of the ascites, which might include prescription of diuretics as well as external drainage of it. Ascites might get infected and causing peritonitis. The proposed idea is a modification of an existing technology called alfapump http://www.alfapump.com that will enhance the safety of the device.
Team – provide names, backgrounds, credentials and relevant experience of the team This is a one-man team: Cataldo Doria. My degree is MD, PhD. I have several roles at TJUH: I am the Director of the Jefferson Transplant Institute, the Director of the Division of Transplantation, and the Surgical Director of the Kimmel Cancer Center – Jefferson Liver Tumor Center. I am a multiorgan transplant surgeon with special interest in liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery. I perform open as well as robotic surgeries. My experience consists of 25 years spent in the operating rooms.
Brief business description. Short description of the industry: Ascites is a major complication of cirrhosis, occurring in 50% of patients over 10 years of follow up. The development of ascites is an important landmark in the natural history of cirrhosis as it is associated with a 50% mortality over two years, and signifies the need to consider liver transplantation as a therapeutic option. The majority (75%) of patients who present with ascites have underlying cirrhosis, with the remainder being due to malignancy (10%), heart failure (3%), tuberculosis (2%), pancreatitis (1%), and other rare causes. Business structure: This will consist in determining if the current manufacturer of the alfapump will be interested in acquiring a patent modification.
