Inspiration
I wanted to create a simple art app inspired by early internet aesthetics. I wanted it to feel low-fi and minimalist.
What it does
User creates a doodle and the app converts it into ascii art using '$' and '/'.
How we built it
The app is built using javascript and HTML. The drawing canvas is split into a grid. An algorithm checks how much of each cell is filled. Lightly filled cells are converted in '/' while more fully filled cells are converted to '$'. After clicking the submit button, the Ascii image is generated. The user can copy the image as plain text.
Challenges we ran into
I was unfamiliar with javascript so understanding the code to be able to edit and personalize the app was difficult.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Made the app over 2 weeks with minimal previous experience.
What we learned
Learnt how to prompt the agent better to have more control over the design.
What's next for ASCII art maker
Future improvements would be to include more symbols instead of '$' and '/' based on how each cell is filled.
