The primary inspiration comes from the psychological concept of Future Self-Continuity (FSC), which describes how connected a person feels to their future self. Research suggests that when an individual feels a strong sense of connection and similarity to their future self, they are more likely to make positive, long-term decisions in the present (e.g., saving money, studying harder, eating healthier). The Problem: For many students, the future self feels like a stranger—a completely different person—making it easy to procrastinate or make short-sighted choices. The Solution: By creating a conversational, relatable, and emotionally supportive AI version of that future self, $\text{Epoch}$ aims to make the abstract concept of a future identity tangible and accessible. The student is not talking to a generic bot, but to a version of themselves who has successfully navigated the challenges they are currently facing.
