Inspiration
My school has been pushing student organizations to practice "sustainable event planning", but hasn't given any benchmarks for this goal. I'm trying to build an app that lets student organizations track their transactions' CO2 emissions (tracked via our school's rental bank cards).
What it does
So far, you can "sign in", register a plaid account (right now it uses a sandbox), and get the carbon emissions for a set transaction range.
How we built it
Used the Plaid API to access transaction and merchant category data. Used the Climatiq API to convert transaction category data and price into a carbon emissions estimate. each transaction and its info is sent to CockroachDB.
Challenges we ran into
Going solo is a lot of work 😅 I got 3 out of my 4 development goals done and even that felt like a stretch (accomplished: accessing financial data, turning data into an estimate, writing estimate to the database; not finished: reading database info to web-app)
Merchant data is not standardized at all so I had to manually create a dictionary of the merchants used in the demo. Eventually I want to expand this so all the relevant Plaid merchant categories are paired with a relevant Climatiq category
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Pretty happy with the range of focuses I was able to switch between in the span of 24 hours. Plus, I think the work I did today gave me the push I need to actually follow through on this project and develop it in full.
