Inspiration
School can be a drag, and many students struggle to stay engaged, which often leads to dropouts. This problem is even more pronounced in some third-world countries where access to quality educational tools is limited, leaving children with poor education and restricted opportunities. ARuLearning was inspired by the need to make education more interactive and captivating, helping students stay in school and dream bigger by harnessing the power of modern technology.
What it does
ARuLearning leverages Augmented Reality (AR) to make learning engaging and fun. By using smartphones, the platform brings educational content to life through AR models, interactive lessons, quizzes, and more. Students can visualize subjects in a way they might not otherwise experience, such as exploring human anatomy or understanding physics concepts. ARuLearning aims to complement teachers by providing a tool that motivates and enriches the educational experience.
How we built it
The development of ARuLearning involved integrating AR technology using A-Frame and ARJS and building a responsive web platform. The site’s design focused on simplicity and accessibility, ensuring teachers could easily navigate and set up lessons. We created printable lesson markers and incorporated camera view functionalities for AR model display.
Challenges we ran into
One of the primary challenges we faced was ensuring AR model performance across different devices with varying capabilities. Additionally, optimizing the display time for descriptions to be user-friendly without being too brief or too long required extensive testing. Implementing a user-friendly interface that works seamlessly on smaller screen sizes also posed design challenges.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of developing an interactive platform that makes learning exciting and accessible. The ability to create a tool that showcases 3D models, interactive descriptions, and a user-friendly quiz system was a significant achievement. Successfully incorporating AR to support education and promote retention in schools is something we take pride in.
What we learned
Through this project, we gained valuable insights into the significance of designing with the user in mind, ensuring that the interface remains intuitive and effective for both teachers and students. We learned the complexities of working with AR technology, particularly in maintaining compatibility and performance across a wide range of devices. Striking the right balance between cutting-edge technology and educational usefulness was another key takeaway. This experience highlighted the importance of seamless integration for educators and the need to maintain an engaging user experience for students.
What's next for ARuLearning
In the future, we plan to expand ARuLearning’s library of lessons to cover more subjects and educational levels. We aim to introduce more interactive features, such as live feedback on quizzes and multiplayer modes for collaborative learning, as we believe collaboration and competition will help encourage students to learn. An end goal for this project would be to work with real schools to implement our solution and encourage education everywhere.
