Inspiration
SUL was born from the story of three Sub-Saharan sisters who survived war, famine, and displacement before rebuilding their lives abroad. Their journey inspired a brand that transforms suffering into beauty and memory into art.
The idea began with a simple question: What does femininity become in times of war?
For many women, it disappears. Art becomes a privilege, beauty becomes unsafe, and identity becomes something to hide. SUL aims to reclaim that lost space by celebrating cultural memory, resilience, and the strength of women who refuse to be erased.
Our name, SUL, comes from the word “SOUL.” The letter O is intentionally removed — symbolizing the loss the sisters endured. The remaining letters represent what stayed alive: unity, persistence, and an unbroken bond.
The logo features "three female elephants", a tribute to the sisters’ African roots. Female elephants lead matriarchal herds and symbolize memory, protection, and loyalty. Their silhouettes show how women support each other through hardship, generation to generation.
What We Learned
– How powerful symbolism can be in brand identity
– How storytelling shapes emotional connection
– How color, form, and cultural elements reinforce meaning
– How minimal design can still carry deep narrative weight
How We Built It
– Created the brand name and its symbolic structure
– Designed a multi-layered elephant logo representing unity
– Selected a color palette inspired by dusk tones: purple, rose, and gold
– Crafted a narrative blending culture, resilience, and femininity
– Structured the brand around emotional storytelling rather than commercial positioning
Challenges
– Balancing emotional depth with clean, modern design
– Translating heavy themes (war, loss, identity) into a brand that still feels uplifting
– Creating a logo that is symbolic but not overwhelming
– Ensuring the story stays respectful, authentic, and powerful
The Essence of SUL
SUL exists to honor women whose souls have been scarred yet never broken.
Through jewelry, it turns memory into art — and pain into beauty.
