Inspiration:

From a very young age, I have been passionate about art, but life led me to dedicate myself to something else. Although I still visit museums, I see that people are not as passionate about art as they used to be. Many people also complain about artificial intelligence. At first, I was fervently opposed to it, but... if you can't beat the enemy... well, I thought about how I could bring art to more people and teach the techniques of some artists in the best way possible: with paintings that use these artists' techniques to transform your photos. Training these artificial intelligences with this purpose is what created ArtMe.

What it does

The application transforms photos from your camera roll into paintings by different European artists.

How we built it

The backend was created with Supabase, in Visual Studio Code assisted by Claude. To train the artificial intelligence, we used Replicate. The system is built with Expo and React Native. The subscription management system is with RevenueCat and the paywalls with Superwall.

Challenges we ran into

Training the artificial intelligence and the model to optimize costs was a challenge at first. We wanted it to be as realistic as possible, but we realized that perfect is the enemy of good, so we decided to pivot to have a more acceptable result rather than a perfectly done one. Some of the paintings did not have sufficient quality and resolution to see how they had been made, so we had to contact some museums to let us take photos or even to pass us some high-resolution photos of the paintings. All the Spanish and Italian museums were very kind in this regard.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The fact of being able to talk to museums (which at first I thought would reject me) and that they loved the idea, even showing the app to their relatives and children, made it all worthwhile to create the app.

What we learned

We learned that sometimes you have to do the ASO (App Store Optimization) even before launching. Thanks for giving us a one-month subscription to App Radar; the only pity is that I can't afford to use it for another month, but I have learned how to position an app by making mistakes. Asking users has also been a great help and has helped me to understand a little better that onboarding is one of the most important things that has to be designed.

What's next for ArtMe - Transform your photos into Masterpieces

I have spoken with museums in Madrid to do an event with them together with schools and show them the application on field trips. We are also going to do thematic days with different stages of authors, such as Goya's black stage (when he lost his mind and began to paint his walls), to teach students about his evolution. We are also planning to expand with artists from Asia.
