Inspiration

The inspiration for Artistry Havens came from witnessing how many talented local artisans struggle to reach people beyond their small communities. Most of them create beautiful, handmade products but lack access to modern technology or online marketplaces.

Many of these artisans cannot read or write fluently, and even when they try using e-commerce apps, the interfaces are often too complex and text-heavy. Watching this gap between skill and opportunity made us realize that technology often forgets about the very people who could benefit from it the most.

We wanted to build something simple, visual, and kind — a space where artisans could share their creations without fear or confusion. That’s how Artistry Havens was born: a platform that merges tradition with technology, giving artisans a fair, easy, and empowering way to showcase their talent to the world.

What it does

Artistry Havens is a visual-first, AI-powered platform that enables artisans to create, promote, and sell their handmade products with ease. The app eliminates the need for reading or typing through an intuitive interface built around icons, emojis, voice commands, and real-time translation.

Key intelligent features include:

AI Storytelling Tool– Automatically generates compelling product descriptions and stories from images or voice inputs.
Image Enhancer – Transforms raw photos into professional-quality visuals to attract more buyers.
Multilingual Chatbot – Offers instant assistance and navigation support in multiple regional languages.
Tutorial Hub – Provides 30-second visual learning videos for every feature, allowing users to learn by watching.
AI Social Sharing– Automatically creates promotional posts for social media to expand reach.
Visual Business Intelligence– Simple charts for sales trends, top products, and customer engagement; no complex dashboards.
Easy Transactions – Secure payment gateway for hassle-free purchases.
Inclusive Marketplace – Buyers can purchase, collaborate on custom designs, and connect directly with artisans.
Sponsor Partnerships – Transparent collaboration between sponsors and artisans to promote growth.

How we built it

Artistry Havens leverages modern cloud and frontend technologies to ensure scalability, reliability, and accessibility:

Frontend

Next.js (App Router) – The main framework for building a responsive and interactive interface.
TypeScript – Ensures type safety and a robust development experience.
Tailwind CSS – For clean, modern, and responsive UI styling.
Turbopack – Speeds up development builds and local testing.
shadcn-style primitives – Reusable UI components for a consistent look and feel.

Backend & Cloud Infrastructure:

Firebase Authentication – OTP and voice-based login to support artisans with low literacy.
Firestore – Real-time database for storing artisan profiles, products, and transactions.
Firebase Storage – Secure storage for product images and media.
Google Cloud Run – Deploys serverless application logic with scalability.
Secret Manager – Secure management of API keys and credentials.
BigQuery & Looker Studio – Data visualization for sales trends, product insights, and analytics dashboards.

Artificial Intelligence

Vertex AI – Powers storytelling, product enhancement, and intelligent insights.
Gemini 2.5 Pro – Advanced AI model for natural language content generation.
Genkit – Manages AI workflows for features such as automated social sharing and content creation.

Speech & Chat

Google Cloud Speech-to-Text API – Converts artisan voice inputs into text for AI processing.
Google Cloud Text-to-Speech API – Converts AI-generated responses and tutorials into voice outputs.
Dialogflow CX – Multilingual chatbot for natural guidance, navigation, and Q&A.

Notifications

Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) – Sends real-time alerts for new orders, promotions, and system updates.

Challenges we ran into

Designing an interface that is easy to use for people with little or no literacy.
Making icons and buttons visually meaningful and intuitive.
Translation API sometimes failed to recognize regional words, so we created fallback translations.
Backend integration issues between Firestore and Cloud Run caused occasional data flow problems.
API key permission errors required careful IAM configuration and securing keys via Secret Manager.
UI spacing and padding issues on small screens needed multiple redesigns to improve accessibility.

Despite all these hurdles, every problem we solved made the app smoother and more inclusive.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Enabled artisans with little digital experience to use the app independently.
Added AI Storytelling and a Tutorial Hub to help artisans confidently present their work.
Built the system entirely on Google Cloud for security, scalability, and reliability.
Created a tool that truly empowers artisans and makes a real-world impact.

What we learned

Technology should adapt to users, not the other way around.
Learned to handle backend connections, secure API keys, and debug real-time database issues.
Small design details greatly affect usability and accessibility.
AI and voice-first features can simplify digital experiences for users with minimal technical knowledge.
