We set out to bridge the gap between people and the timeless world of art. Art often feels locked away in galleries or dense textbooks—so we reimagined the experience. ArtAtlas is our vision of an app that brings art directly to users' hands, transforming passive viewing into immersive discovery with the help of AI.

What ArtAtlas Does

ArtAtlas is a sleek, multi-platform app (iOS, Android, Web) that delivers curated art content and conversational insights through an intuitive three-screen experience:

1. Home – Picture of the Day

A fresh artwork appears daily, offering users a delightful visual and a snippet of context—sparking curiosity and discovery from the very first screen.

2. Virtual Art Gallery – Ask AI Anything

Step into a conversational space where users can interact with an AI-powered guide. Ask about symbolism, historical context, or artistic style—get spoken audio responses powered by our AI pipeline.

3. Collections – Search, Filter, Explore

Dive into a growing archive of artworks. Users can search and filter by style, artist, era, or medium—making it easy to curate a personal journey through art history.

Business Model – Freemium with Room to Grow

ArtAtlas uses a tiered access system:

  • Free Users:

    • Daily access to Picture of the Day.
    • Interact with up to 5 artworks per day across gallery and collections.
  • Premium Subscription (Coming Soon):

    • Unlimited AI Queries: Speak to your art guide anytime.
    • Full Access to Collections: Unlock every artwork and curated gallery.
    • Future AR/VR Modes: Experience art in your space with Apple Vision Pro and VR headsets.

Payment integration is on the roadmap, ensuring seamless upgrades across devices.

How We Built It

  • Frontend: One codebase in Flutter for iOS, Android, and Web using the Provider package for clean, scalable state management.
  • Backend: A FastAPI service running on GCP VM, CI/CD handled via Google Cloud Build.
  • AI Capabilities:

    • Conversational AI Pipeline: Includes Speech-to-Text, LLM-based response generation, and Text-to-Speech.
    • Visual Similarity Search: Powered by Vertex AI Matching Engine with real-time vector-based retrieval.

Challenges We Faced

  • Voice Interaction Latency: Achieving smooth, natural audio conversations across platforms.
  • Freemium Architecture: Enforcing daily limits and prepping for secure, scalable subscription systems.
  • Cross-Device UI Polish: Ensuring a consistently delightful UX across phones, tablets, and desktops.

Accomplishments

  • A multi-platform app that feels cohesive and business-ready—not just a prototype.
  • A conversational AI feature that feels genuinely helpful, making art exploration engaging and informative.
  • A clear path to monetization and advanced experiences like AR and community interaction.

What We Learned

  • Build with Product Thinking: Monetization, entitlements, and user experience must be part of the core architecture with GCP.
  • End-to-End AI is Essential: A powerful feature is only as good as its weakest link—data handling, response quality, and delivery must be optimized.
  • State Management Matters: Provider allowed us to build a solid, predictable system across screens and flows.

What’s Next for ArtAtlas

  • AR Mode: Let users “hang” artwork on their own walls using Augmented Reality and Apple Vision Pro.
  • VR Gallery Tours: A premium feature for immersive, room-scale art exploration.
  • Personalized Recommendations: AI-curated suggestions based on interaction history and preferences.
  • User Galleries: Premium users can save and share their own themed collections with others.
