Inspiration
I was inspired to make this app because of my passion for languages. Since I was young, I have been fascinated by the various forms of communication around the world. It was always so interesting to me how there are so many ways of connecting with people through their unique language. After completing some research and code, I am glad to say that my app contains surface information for everyone to learn!
What it does
My app is an interactive and educational app where the user can discover things through selections and a mini quiz. The user can learn about the most spoken languages as well as how many speakers there are of that language, what language family it comes from, what branch it comes from, and much more. The user can also learn about sign language. There is a page dedicated to ASL which allows the user to explore the ways of spelling in one of the most captivating languages. Finally, there is a mini-quiz at the end that allows the user to apply their knowledge to see if they have truly absorbed some of the information.
How I built it
The first step to creating this project was brainstorming. I thought of many ideas but still decided to stick to what I was most interested in. Next, I created a draft and designed the screens of what I wanted the app to have. Then I started implementing these ideas into code and actual designs. I encountered challenges and bugs but I was able to solve them through determination.
Challenges I ran into
One challenge that I ran into was deciding the specifics of my project. For example, I didn't know what to include or what not to include. I was struggling with determining which facts to add to my data page and what facts to remove, but at the end of the day, I was able to compromise with all my ideas to create the final project.
Accomplishments that I am proud of
I am proud to complete this app. It was my first time participating in a Hackathon and I am very proud of creating what I envisioned to create. I thought that it would be an overwhelming challenge to handle the time restriction and create and implement an idea within a weekend, but it was much more fun and educational than I expected.
What I learned
I learned that organization and preparation are very important. Before I started to code, I wrote down ideas and sketched out designs. I also looked for possible faults that could occur in my project.
What's next for Around the World
As of now, I am a high school student who is still learning more about coding and how to make a difference. I am hoping that one day I can use this project to create a difference and connect more people throughout the world. Instead of only having a page about learning sign language, I would want to create a page that can go through many more languages and connect different cultures and people across the globe.
