Inspiration

India's frontline health workers - ASHAs and ANMs - prepare for competency checks by re-reading thick paper manuals, yet research on learning shows spaced, active recall is what actually makes knowledge stick. We wanted a drill tool that works where they work: on a basic phone, with no network, in the language they counsel in.

What it does

ArogyaDrill is an offline-first drill app for community health workers. It serves 66 curated questions across 7 core community-health topics (maternal health, immunization, nutrition, communicable diseases, emergency care, NCDs, IPC), scores answers instantly with explanations, and schedules weak questions to resurface using an SM-2-inspired spaced-repetition algorithm. Streaks and a personal mistake log keep motivation and revision on track, and a 60-second advisory timer builds the pace of real counselling conversations.

How we built it

A single-page application in plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript with zero backend. All progress lives in localStorage, so after the first load the app runs completely offline. Content ships as a bilingual question bank (English and Hindi) with per-topic ids so future topics can be added as plain data.

Challenges we ran into

Making adaptive scheduling work without a server meant reimplementing a lightweight SM-2 variant entirely in the browser. Keeping everything in one dependency-free file while staying fast on low-end phones forced careful DOM work. Translating clinical phrasing into simple, field-friendly Hindi without losing accuracy was the hardest editorial task.

Accomplishments we're proud of

A tool a worker can open on a Rs 6,000 phone in a village with one bar of signal, drill for five minutes, and come out better prepared - with nothing to install and nothing to pay.

What we learned

Spaced repetition can be made tiny: the whole scheduler is under 200 lines. And offline-first is a product decision, not a feature flag: it changed what we stored, how we rendered, and how we tested.

What's next for ArogyaDrill

More question banks (TB, NCD screening, digital health missions), audio read-aloud for low-literacy users, and an offline-first PWA install path.
