Inspiration

The other day, as we were traveling to Ramsey Student Center, we came across a girl who was laying on the side of the road, hit by a car. We did not know how to help her, but luckily two nurses from the UGA Health Center came running across the street to her aid. We were moved by the whole situation and thought what if there was an app that could facilitate more of these types of situations? When we were introduced to the topic of helping our community, our minds both went back to this thought.

What it does

In emergency situations where time sensitivity is essential, a minute of CPR may be the difference in life or death. ARM-Link works to notify off-duty first responders of emergencies in their area. Nurses, doctors, paramedics, police officers, and firefighters may opt-in to receive text messages and in-app alerts of events in close proximity to their location. The text message will include details on the event, how urgently help is needed, the location of the event, and any other possible notes such as building floor and room number.

How we built it

We used a combination of Azure to host a server and store a database, SQL to build the database, App building programs such as Kivy to design the app, and python to link it all together.

Challenges we ran into

The time needed to implement everything together exceeded the time we had allocated. We also struggled with trying to connect the API as we started coding with Java initially.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to set up the SQL server with Azure and figure out how to implement APIs in an unfamiliar language to us.

What we learned

We learned many skills and tricks in working with Azure and SQL databases since it was our first time working with them. Also, as a mechanical engineering student, it was my first major introduction to in-depth coding.

What's next for Arm-Link

We plan to expand the app to include the locations of first-aid kits, AEDs, restrooms, and water fountains which could all be vital in an emergency medical situation.
