Argo - Meet Someone New
Last semester, we took a hard look at our campus culture. How nobody really talks to each other, & how hard it can be to make real friends. I mean, think about it. Did you introduce yourself to the person next to you when you sat down today? Are you sitting next to someone right now that you didn’t know before? Did you say hi?
It’s funny, because you’d think there’d be no better place than UofM for bringing together a bunch of crazy-smart, cool people. But it doesn’t really work like that.
So where do you go when you want to make friends— just friends, but real friends?
For the past three months, we’ve been sending students out on blind friend-dates. We've been:
- getting people out of their bubbles & in the room with someone who wants to be there
- skipping profiles & deleting romantic pretenses
- creating connections in real life
The process works like this: students give us their availability, and we match them up with someone who is also free at that time on Friday (which is when Argo dates take place!). We tell them when & where to meet, but we don't reveal who they're meeting until they actually arrive. We've been doing this manually over the course of the last semester, and after sending out 70 students on 45 Argo dates and getting really positive feedback, we decided to automate the process.
