Inspiration

Asking the simplest questions sometimes helps: Are you there? Especially during corona-times.

What it does

Imagine a grandmother that cannot receive any visits. Or image a young mother in a violent household or someone being quarantined due to covid-19. We call these people Wards.

We built a service that allows Guardians to look after people, who need to be looked after every now and then. :)

Our service enables Guardians to maintain Bonds to their Wards by sending out reminders to the Wards, asking them for regular feedback. If the feedback is not coming within a defined interval the Guardian receives a warning - it's up to them how to react: maybe they make a phone call, plan a visit or alert the authorities.

AreYouThere is a low-threshold service and can be used to collect additional information about the Wards - such as "current state" or requests for assistance - if the respective person wants to provide further input.

It was our goal to provide a service that ...

  • is extremely easy to use and also allows some degree of discretion, which both can be good for certain groups of Wards
  • can be self-deployed by Guardians - which can be friends, family members, social societies, ...
  • can help preserving mental and physical health during all sorts of crisises - especially during lock-down situation during the on-going corona-crisis.

How we built it

As a project during the EU vs. Virus Hackathon 2020. With great Developers and a lot of spirit as our fuel.

Challenges we ran into

Definitely the time. Also, from our six participants two had to drop out of the team during the weekend due to unforeseen private matters.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. We established a great team of friends & colleagues
  2. We made it and submitted something: EU vs. Virus: AreYouThere Submission

What we learned

  • a social science professor gave valuable & great feedback on the project
  • some new modern tech + dev
  • it's not just coding
  • there are many talented & engaged people out there fighting the crisis

What's next for AreYouThere

We are thinking about ...

  • Bringing live an actual website running our service some time soon
  • Native Apps for IOS & Android?
  • Further ways of notifying Wards such as Chatbots?
  • Many technical improvements
  • Optimizing for various Ward groups
