Inspiration
As we are international students we understand and deal with the struggles with having to balance our financials on a day to day basis, all while being thousands of miles away from home. We hope to use generative AI for a better understanding of a healthy lifestyle and, help others understand financial literacy while pursuing a higher degree.
What it does
Our web application receives information from a student about their status (local or international student), extra-curricular activity, the city they would be living in, and the university they would be attending. The data will be handled with OpenAI's API and generate a prompt, asking OpenAI's gpt-4 model the cost of living in the area of the city the student will be living in, and the cost of financials of being a student at the university. Finally the application generates a bar chart showing the different products and price of said products that a student at the university would normally buy.
How we built it
We built our web application using JavaScript, React, Python, Flask, and CSS.
Challenges we ran into
Connecting the back-end to the front-end using an API and understanding the OpenAI API.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating a web application using a generative AI model that will help students understand their accurate financial costs as well as helping balance their lifestyle.
What we learned
Our team gained valuable insights into designing and building a full-stack application. We got hands-on experience with integrating a front-end framework with a back-end API using a generative AI API.
What's next for AreaAfford
We will continue to strive to help others to feel more comfortable in a new environment.
