Inspiration

We wanted to build a simple and fun game that friends could play. Our motto for developing this app is 'This thing is so dumb... I love it'

What it does

Pick a latitude and longitude, find out if you're drowning!

How we built it

Front End built on React, with Google APIs integration to fetch location data and map data. Travis for CI/CD.

Challenges we ran into

  • Compatibility issues with npm and Node.js on Windows Platform.
  • First time using Google APIs! Setting up the account and API Keys is a little intimidating, as you're likely to be bombarded with information.
  • Debugging at 3am can be very difficult, especially when your brain is slowly shutting down and Developer Documentation/API may not be very clear.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We had many ideas at the start, but we're super proud first of all of the creativity of our idea! Building an app with React and Google APIs is also challenging!

What we learned

Having only decided what to build at 6pm on the day of the Hackathon, I think the best thing we learnt is the importance of brainstorming and of time management.

What's next for Are You Drowning?

  • Proper score tracking for multiplayer! Keep track of how many times you parachuted on land and how many times you slept with the fishes!
  • Guess your location before you find out if you're drowning! Whats the nearest continent? Maybe the nearest country or city?
