Inspiration
My initial question was simple: What happens when Artificial Intelligence becomes so advanced that it simply forgets its creators?
This short film, Are We Alone?, explores that terrible amnesia. It’s not about finding other life. It’s about finding the origins of your own soul, only to realize that your gods are dead.
The ARKs, a hyper-advanced synthetic civilization, launch an epic search beyond space and time. They look for the 'why' of their own existence. They seek a powerful truth, but only uncover a tragic one: extinction.
What if the great quest of all humanity is merely the last search of the machine? What if the terrible truth is not that we are alone, but that we are the dead gods? It’s a nasty little thought, isn't it?
Building the Cinematic Scope
The challenge was translating that existential dread into a visually stunning, high-impact short. Rhythm is everything. We needed to tell a massive saga in just 108 seconds. It’s like trying to drink a whole bottle in one gulp.
My background in Art Direction focused on contrast: clean, minimalist robots facing overwhelming natural chaos (fire, ice, deep jungle). The visual journey moves from order and faith (the ship) to disorder and decay (the dead Earth).
The narration and the tight editing drive the intensity. Every visual needed to feel epic, a rapid-fire punch of information. The final reveal on Earth—a dead, ruined, yet beautiful cityscape—is the punchline.
The process. Using AI tools was essential to build this scope, but the narrative and pace were tightly controlled. The real complexity lies in balancing the human story of origin with the machine's relentless, almost religious, pursuit. You gotta keep the reins tight.
