Arctic Adventure: The EcoGuardians

Inspiration

The recent news about wildfires and other extreme weather situations made us wonder if crises are so close to our daily file, inspiring us to turn our sight to the environment. With the polar bears being poorly affected by climate change and pollution, we decided to create a game that depicts the threats the polar bears are facing. Therefore, our game fulfills an educational purpose to spread awareness of protecting the natural environment.

What it does

This is an educational platform game that spreads awareness of the extreme environmental conditions that the polar bears are experiencing and provides the players an understanding of how many threats the polar bears have to face and how hard for them to live.

How we built it

We built the game with Python and Pygame, and we used Pygame to create the graphic user interface.

Challenges we ran into

With this hackathon being only 36 hours, we had to regulate and organize our time very well. The limited time has challenged us in quicker decision-making, more effective use of time, and productivity. We had to give up on the less necessary features of the program to be able to finish a product by the deadline. It was also our first time programming a platform game and our first time participating in a hackathon. This further challenges us with more complex programming skills.

4. Exploring new methods, libraries, and other new knowledge of the language.

What we learned

By building Arctic Adventure: The EcoGuardians, we improved our collaborative skills to work as a group to work effectively together. We also learned many new libraries and methods of Python to develop more complex games. We also learned how to plan the programming process to fit the limited time frame, so we understand the necessity levels of all the features that we want to include.

What's next for Arctic Adventure: The EcoGuardians

We will continue developing this platform game with more levels that increase difficulty levels and add more features to the game to educate all different threats to polar bears. We will add lives, energy levels, timers, food, and swimmable water to enable the players to explore underwater, and different tiles with different features. With more features, levels, and themes added to the game, we hope to foster more awareness and understanding of the environmental issues that polar bears are facing.
