Inspiration

We’ve all bought furniture that looked great online but clashed with our rooms. Worse, the EPA reports 12 million tons of furniture end up in landfills yearly due to returns and poor fits. We wanted to merge sustainability with tech to solve this universal problem—inspiring us to create an AR tool that helps users see it before they buy it.

What it does

ARchitect lets users visualize furniture in their actual space using augmented reality. Point your phone camera at a room, and our app overlays life-sized 3D models of couches, tables, or decor. Experiment with styles, rearrange layouts, and share mockups with friends—no measuring tape or guesswork required.

How we built it

Tools: Echo3D, Figma (UI design), Sketchfab (free 3D models). Process: Designed the app interface in Figma for a seamless user experience. Uploaded 3D furniture models to Echo3D and configured AR markers for placement. Tested live AR demos using smartphones and QR code anchors.

Challenges we ran into

AR Tracking: Struggled with shaky object placement until we simplified to marker-based AR. Time Crunch: Prioritized a "good enough" demo over perfection. No-Code Limits: Echo3D’s learning curve forced us to cut real-time rotation features.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built a functional AR prototype without coding in under 9 hours—proving no-code tools can empower rapid innovation. Created a judge-friendly demo that visually wowed in 30 seconds using Figma mockups + live AR interaction. Infused sustainability into a tech project, tying furniture waste to real-world impact

What we learned

AR isn’t magic—it’s markers, models, and patience (and a little prayer for good lighting). UI/UX design matters even in hackathons—sleek Figma mockups hid our backend simplicity. Scoping ruthlessly saves sanity: Cutting real-time rotation let us nail the core feature. Sustainability is a universal hook

What's next for ARchitect

Partner with IKEA/Wayfair: Integrate real product catalogs for instant shopping in AR. AI Design Assistant: “This lamp matches your rug!”—ML-driven style recommendations. Multiplayer Mode: Redesign rooms with friends in real-time, no matter where they are. Sustainability Dashboard: Track how many “waste pounds” you avoided by using AR. AR Mirrors: Virtual try-on for decor items like rugs and wall art.
