Inspiration
Team Octo was inspired by the American Red Cross to create a human-like interface for potential volunteers. During our user research, we heard from the American Red Cross that potential volunteers are often mismatched with opportunities/positions and the best way to resolve this is through a simple conversation. So we created the American Red Cross Human Interface Experience - Archie.
What it Does
Archie is an intelligent bot that helps potential volunteers get matched with relevant opportunities near them. Archie is deployed to production on the web at https://www.archiebot.org and also has an integrated Slackbot. Archie can answer questions using Natural Language Processing (NLP) to have a conversation with volunteers.
How we Built It
Archie is built using a variety of Amazon Web Services (AWS) managed services including S3, Lambda, IAM, VPC, Route 53, Lex, Kinesis, Cognito, CloudFront, CloudFormation, Comprehend, and Athena.
Accomplishments
Team Octo is proud to build a tool which can help volunteers and potentially save lives. The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers, who makeup 90% of their workforce. By better matching volunteers with opportunities and positions, Archie will further this important and critical mission of the American Red Cross.
What's Next
Archie also has a Twitter integration in development to scrape the Twitter firehose for potential volunteers. This will allow Archie to proactively reach out to potential volunteers and begin a conversation with them. Based on their Twitter history, Archie can make recommendations and match the user to volunteer opportunities. Next step is to fully integrate Archie into Twitter and other social networks.
