Archetype USA
Inspiration
Behind every Olympic and Paralympic athlete is more than medals and records — there are years of discipline, resilience, adaptive strategies, environmental influences, and personal journeys. We wanted to build a platform that allows everyday fans to feel connected to that larger Team USA story through AI, data, and storytelling.
While exploring existing sports analytics tools, we noticed that many platforms focus heavily on elite outcomes and medal statistics while giving limited visibility to Paralympic athletes, adaptive pathways, accessibility, and fan participation. We saw an opportunity to create something more inclusive and human-centered.
That idea became Archetype USA — a Gemini-powered AI platform that helps users explore how their own traits, abilities, and interests could align with historical Olympic and Paralympic athlete archetypes across 120 years of Team USA data.
Our goal was not to predict success, but to create an experience that is:
- interactive
- educational
- inclusive
- emotionally engaging
- accessibility-first
while showcasing the reasoning and multimodal capabilities of Gemini and Google Cloud.
What it does
Archetype USA is an AI-powered sports intelligence and storytelling platform that combines:
- historical Team USA athlete data
- Gemini reasoning
- conversational AI
- geography-aware insights
- adaptive sports analysis
- accessibility tools
to create a personalized fan experience.
Athlete Archetype Engine
Users can input traits such as:
- height
- endurance
- strength
- speed
- mobility considerations
- sport preferences
Gemini then classifies users into athlete archetypes such as:
- Powerhouse
- Aerobic Endurance Engine
- Explosive Hybrid
- Technical Precision
- Adaptive Strategy Athlete
- Multi-Modal Athlete
The AI explains why users align with certain archetypes instead of simply assigning labels.
Compare Me to Team USA
Users can compare themselves against historical Team USA athlete patterns.
The platform generates:
- closest archetype matches
- similarity reasoning
- strength alignment
- gap analysis
- conditional improvement suggestions
Example:
“Improving upper body strength could help align more closely with rowing archetypes.”
The system intentionally avoids deterministic predictions and instead focuses on responsible, pattern-based reasoning.
Athlete DNA Graph
One of our most unique features is the Athlete DNA Graph, which creates a multidimensional athletic identity map.
Instead of assigning users to a single sport, the system analyzes overlapping traits across:
- endurance
- explosiveness
- coordination
- adaptability
- strategy
This allows users to discover cross-sport similarities and hidden archetype overlaps.
Cross-Sport Identity Generator
Rather than limiting users to one sports identity, the AI identifies multiple possible sports ecosystems that share similar athletic traits.
For example:
- swimming
- rowing
- triathlon
- cycling
may all overlap within the same endurance-oriented profile.
This creates a more flexible and realistic understanding of athletic identity.
Historical Twin Finder
The platform includes a historical pattern engine that matches users to anonymous historical athlete clusters across Team USA history.
Instead of identifying real individuals, the AI explains how users may align with:
- historical endurance clusters
- adaptive tactical profiles
- multi-sport Olympic archetypes
- era-specific athletic patterns
This transforms sports history into an interactive AI discovery experience.
Training Environment & Sports Hub Discovery
Archetype USA also includes a geography-aware discovery system.
Users can search for:
- sports complexes
- Olympic training centers
- adaptive sports facilities
- coaching hubs
- athletic ecosystems
across the United States.
The AI explains how certain environments could support different athlete archetypes based on:
- altitude
- climate
- regional sports ecosystems
- accessibility infrastructure
This feature helps connect users to real-world sports opportunities and communities.
Accessibility & Visual Impairment Support
Accessibility was one of the core priorities of our platform.
Every AI-generated insight can also be converted into an audio-friendly spoken format for users with visual impairments.
The system automatically generates:
- simplified spoken summaries
- screen-reader-friendly responses
- conversational audio scripts
This allows more users to interact with sports analytics in an inclusive and accessible way.
Paralympic Representation & Adaptive Analysis
We wanted Paralympic representation to feel fully integrated into the system instead of being treated as a secondary category.
The AI includes:
- adaptive athlete archetypes
- mobility-aware analysis
- inclusive reasoning pipelines
- Paralympic classification explanations
- adaptive sports recommendations
with equal analytical depth as Olympic pathways.
What-If Simulation Engine
Users can simulate hypothetical changes such as:
- increased endurance
- improved flexibility
- greater strength
- different training environments
Gemini then explains how those changes could influence alignment with different athlete archetypes over time.
📈 Future Archetype Drift Engine
The platform also simulates how athletic profiles may evolve across time.
Instead of static analysis, the AI models how user traits could shift toward different archetypes depending on:
- training style
- physical adaptation
- environmental conditions
- sport specialization
Coach Mode AI
Users can switch between different AI interaction modes:
- Analyst Mode
- Coach Mode
- Fan Storytelling Mode
This creates a more immersive and personalized experience.
Pressure Simulation Mode
We also experimented with scenario-based AI reasoning.
The system can simulate:
- high-pressure competition environments
- strategic adaptation scenarios
- Olympic-scale event contexts
and explain how different archetypes might respond under pressure.
Story Mode
To make the platform emotionally engaging, Archetype USA generates personalized Team USA narratives based on user traits and historical athlete journeys.
This transforms raw analytics into:
- storytelling
- identity exploration
- fan connection
rather than just statistics.
How we built it
We built Archetype USA using a modern AI-first architecture powered by Gemini and Google Cloud.
Frontend
- React
- Next.js
- Tailwind CSS
The frontend was designed to feel conversational, immersive, and accessible rather than like a traditional sports dashboard.
AI Layer
Gemini powers:
- archetype classification
- comparative analysis
- simulation reasoning
- narrative storytelling
- adaptive sports reasoning
- accessibility responses
- geography-aware recommendations
- conversational interactions
Prompt engineering played a critical role in:
- maintaining responsible AI outputs
- preventing deterministic claims
- balancing Olympic and Paralympic analysis
- creating emotionally engaging storytelling
- supporting accessibility-first interactions
Cloud Infrastructure
We deployed the platform using Google Cloud technologies including:
- Google Cloud Run
- Gemini API
- Google AI Studio
- Google Maps Platform
- scalable analytics-ready data pipelines
Data & Analytics
We combined:
- historical Team USA athlete datasets
- public Olympic and Paralympic data
- geography-aware sports infrastructure data
- adaptive sports information
- archetype clustering systems
- AI-driven reasoning pipelines
Challenges we ran into
Responsible AI Reasoning
One of our biggest challenges was ensuring the AI remained insightful without becoming overly predictive.
We redesigned prompts multiple times to ensure the system used conditional language such as:
“could align with”
instead of:
“will succeed in”
This became one of the core ethical principles of the platform.
Paralympic Parity
Ensuring meaningful Paralympic representation required careful prompt engineering and analytical framing.
We wanted adaptive athlete analysis to feel equally detailed, intelligent, and integrated into the experience rather than separated into a secondary layer.
Accessibility Design
Building an accessibility-first AI experience introduced additional design complexity.
We needed the platform to:
- remain visually engaging,
- support conversational interaction,
- and generate screen-reader-friendly audio outputs
without losing analytical depth.
Turning Analytics into Storytelling
Sports datasets are highly numerical, but we wanted the platform to feel emotional and human-centered.
Transforming data into compelling storytelling was one of the most challenging — and rewarding — aspects of the project.
