Inspiration
It is ever apparent that computer science students face uncertainty about their future, especially with the ever changing field and the development of AI. While there are plenty of driven and serious ways to prepare for the future, what about whimsical ones? This is where tarot cards come in, a deck of cards used for divination and self reflection. We knew coming into this Hackathon that there would be much discussion about students’ careers and we wanted a fun way to play off this demand for advice and self reflection.
What it does
Our app gives a tarot reading by drawing tarot cards one at a time at random. Users are then faced with a scenario that prompts them to make a choice between a few options. This is repeated two more times for a total of three cards and three scenarios. Users then are given a summary of their reading based on the cards drawn and choices made at the end.
How we built it
After brainstorming we narrowed down our scope (in this case the amount of cards in a deck) to something manageable for the time constraint. We also created drafts on paper of what each interface would look like and our complete plans before we started implementation. We used AI to help create much of the logic of our app, helping us with JavaScript and HTML and would go back in to make changes to better match our project plan, adding images to make scenarios more immersive, adding card information, key words to look for, etc…
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges we ran into was our inexperience with using GitHub, understanding JavaScript, and communicating our project visions among each other. Trying to implement our style sheet was also something we found trouble with: it was very foreign and we tended to not fully understand how to implement our designs using the syntax of css. Along with that we also struggled to space our images without heavily impacting the formatting.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have coded on languages we haven't used before and getting over the hurdle of repositories as well as creating an app.
What we learned
We gained a lot of collaborative skills, learning to share and communicate our plans/work on GitHub.
What's next for Arcana Trials
We hope to be able to implement custom graphics and interconnection to the scenarios to make it flow more like a cohesive story. We also hope to add the rest of the cards.
