Inspiration

Aquadex was created to solve two long-standing problems in the reefing hobby: 1) reefers have no simple, structured way to track their tanks, and 2) the hobby has no centralized, trustworthy database for coral lineage.

Most reef keepers rely on spreadsheets, screenshots, and Facebook posts to track parameters or confirm coral names. This leads to lost lineage, mislabeling, confusion in the marketplace, and inconsistent tank care.

Aquadex brings all of this into one place: a clean reef-tracking app powered by AI, and the foundation for the first community-driven coral lineage database.

What it does

Aquadex is an AI-powered reef tracking platform that helps hobbyists understand, organize, and care for their tanks.

Current features include:

  • Tank Logging: create tanks, track sizes, equipment, and notes
  • Livestock Tracking: add fish, inverts, corals, and anemones
  • Parameter Tracking: record water tests and view historical trends
  • Coral Lineage Tracking: log mother colonies, vendors, and frag lineage
  • Aquadex Central Database: early structure for a unified coral lineage and care library
  • AI Reef Assistant: personalized guidance for coral care, stocking, and parameter interpretation

The MVP focuses on clarity and structure, helping reefers make better decisions with data instead of guesswork.

How we built it

Aquadex is built with a modern, modular stack:

  • Next.js + React for the frontend
  • Supabase for authentication, database, and storage
  • shadcn/ui + Magic UI for clean UI components
  • AI LLMs for coral care and parameter insights
  • Lovable.dev for rapid iteration
  • Edge Functions & n8n (planned) for automation and analysis workflows

The architecture is designed to scale into a full reefing ecosystem that includes vendors, farms, and verified coral lineage.

Challenges we ran into

  • Designing a data model that captures coral lineage clearly
  • Making AI outputs genuinely helpful for real reefers
  • Creating a UI simple enough for beginners but detailed enough for experienced hobbyists
  • Organizing coral, livestock, and parameter data into a unified schema
  • Building a foundation that is useful today but scalable for the long-term vision

The biggest challenge was simplifying complex reef information into a tool that feels approachable.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a functional reef tracking app with AI support
  • Created an early-stage coral lineage system within Aquadex
  • Designed a clean dashboard for managing tanks and livestock
  • Implemented AI guidance based on real tank inputs
  • Built the framework for a verified coral database that solves mislabeling and provenance issues
  • Established a clear path toward vendor and farm integrations

What we learned

  • Reefers want clarity, structure, and trustworthy information
  • AI is far more powerful when tied to real tank data
  • A centralized coral lineage database fills a major gap in the hobby
  • Data consistency dramatically improves coral care outcomes
  • Starting with B2C tracking creates the foundation for B2B vendor adoption later

What's next for Aquadex

  • Aquadex Database Expansion: full coral encyclopedia with lineage, care profiles, photos, and genealogy
  • Vendor & Farm Portal: allow sellers to register corals and publish verified lineage
  • Lineage Verification Tools: track mother → frag → reseller → hobbyist
  • Tank Timelines: photos, growth tracking, frag logs, and issue history
  • Community Features: tank sharing, collections, and lineage visibility
  • Trading Ecosystem: verified coral marketplace to replace Facebook groups
  • Mobile App: fast logging, photos, and on-the-go tank management

Aquadex is evolving into the operating system for reef keepers — bringing clarity, trust, and structure to the corals we keep and the tanks we care for.
