Inspiration

Outdoor gear can be expensive, creating a barrier for many who want to explore the outdoors. Constantly buying new gear also raises sustainability concerns. We set out to create a better way—one that allows members of the Arc'teryx community to share gear with each other in a trusted, people-powered network. By sharing what we already have, we make the outdoors more accessible, more sustainable, and more connected.

What it does

ARC'SHARE'YX is a web app designed to help members of the Arc'teryx community share their outdoor gear with each other. By allowing users to connect through loaning their unused equipment and borrowing items whose cost may otherwise be prohibitive, ARC'SHARE'YX promotes sustainability, accessibility, and community. Our in-app credit system incentivizes users to lend their gear to others and participate in our gear-sharing economy.

How we built it

We developed ARC'SHARE'YX using React, Next.js, and TypeScript to create a responsive and intuitive user experience. Firebase powers the backend, providing real-time data handling, authentication, and seamless scalability to support a growing community of gear sharers.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge we faced was the implementation of Firestore—Firebase's database service—to manage our request posting systems. Though no one on our team had previously used the platform, we were able to overcome our initial difficulties through collaboration and perseverance, as well as learn something new along the way.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that we were able to leverage our problem-solving and teamwork skills to develop a web app using methods and frameworks none of us had ever encountered before. Despite the learning curve, we successfully built a functional, user-friendly platform that promotes sustainability and community.

What we learned

Building ARC'SHARE'YX taught us the importance of designing for trust and community, especially in a platform centred around sharing personal gear. We also all learned a great deal about full-stack web development, as our team went into the hackathon with very limited web-dev experience.

What's next for ARC'SHARE'YX

In the future, ARC'SHARE'YX can be expanded with:

  • An in-app chat function for requesters and fulfillers to communicate with
  • A two-way verification that an item has been borrowed/returned for additional security
  • A more gamified experience with new ways to gain credits, creating additional incentives to lend gear
