Arbiter DAO

Inspiration

Arbiter DAO is an Olympus DAO and Klima DAO fork brought to the cosmos ecosystem combined with the carbon market, utilizing Regen's eco credit module to secure carbon assets.

Arbiter DAO is named after a spaceship from the game starcraft. An arbiter in starcraft would use a skill called "stasis field" to freeze any units in the field. By claiming carbon credits as offsets and enabling users to retire these credits, Arbiter DAO serves the same purpose of freezing carbon credits within the protocol to inflate the price of carbon credits and contribute to building healthier earth.

What it does

Arbiter DAO is a blockchain built using Cosmos SDK and Tendermint.

With Arbiter DAO enforcing price rises in the carbon credit market by absorbing eco-credits and carbon credits into the protocol's treasury and by retiring them within the protocol, Arbiter DAO aims to start a movement for Earth within the cosmos ecosystem. Each ARB token would be backed by any verified eco-credit token with the equivalency of 1 tonne of carbon reduction.

Regen has recently released the eco-credit module, where different chains across the cosmos ecosystem could easily adapt eco-credit modules and claim their credits as offsets on-chain. Arbiter DAO is the best use case of eco-credits, utilizing IBC to manage eco-credits existing within Regen and any other future chains that would onboard in the cosmos ecosystem.

One of the limitations of Olympus DAO or Klima DAO was that the tokens treasury could manage is strictly restricted to the chain. That is, the treasury of the protocol would not be able to handle assets from different chains. However, with the power of IBC, Arbiter DAO would not have to be restricted by chain to manage carbon assets from all different chains. Any carbon assets from any chain within the cosmos ecosystem could come together as one in Arbiter DAO.

How we built it

Arbiter DAO was built with the Cosmos SDK and React.

Challenges we ran into

Because Olympus DAO was written in solidity, it was only suitable to work on top of a virtual machine, not a separate independent chain. To fork Olympus DAO to the cosmos ecosystem, we had to start by redesigning the structure of Olympus DAO from scratch so that it is suitable to work as a sovereign, independent chain.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

There have been many expectations and words about forking Olympus DAO within the Cosmos ecosystem. Arbiter DAO is the first Olympus fork that has been launched using the cosmos-sdk. We are expecting hundreds and millions of other cosmonaut developers to use our open-source codebase to create a different range of Olympus DAO fork in the cosmos ecosystem.

What we learned

With this opportunity, we had a chance to get to learn about how carbon credits work as an offset and exactly how they go through the process of retirement.

What's next for Arbiter DAO

  • Bringing more carbon credits within the cosmos ecosystem to maximize the usage of Arbiter DAO, to secure more carbon credits for Earth.
  • To adjust better parameters that could be controlled by governance for main-net launch.
