Our Inspiration: Based on several conversations with Jenna Duarte, Founder and President Intertwined Conservation Corporation, we realized that in order to address the illegal poaching and trading of macaw in Costa Rica, field biologists and conservation organizations need to gather better data the local macaw bird population. Around the world 1/3 of all parrot species are threatened with extinction due to: habitat loss, illegal trade and hunting. In addition the average income in rural areas of Costa Rica is approx. $200 per month.
What our app does: Ara Vista Watchers, is a tool to help convert non-professional poachers to conservation activists/local biologists. We created an easy to use App that inspires and incentivised local communities to help collect valuable data on the macaw bird population. The app reward system incentivised the community member to become and active bird watcher and be financially reward for their valuable data collection (e.g. photo, location, bird behaviors and other relevant characteristics). Link to our app (please add)
How we built it: Infobip: Receive SMS and API to send new messages. Zapier: Route data between Infobip and Google Sheet, set up inbound webhook to collect image EXIF data Google Sheets: parse EXIF data, calculate distance, verify users, determine which location comes next. C#: Extract exif data
What's next for Ara Vista Watchers Translate the app in Spanish and expand the data collection areas to communities in Costa Rica and neighboring countries
