Inspiration

Our inspiration was the amount of food waste we see in society today. We wanted to create an app that could help prevent food waste, while also being useful to the user as it shows portions, and thereby encouraging them to use the app.

What it does

This app uses augmented reality to display the size of whatever food you are ordering. For example, if you wanted to order a plate of spaghetti, but you didn’t know how large the plate is, you could use this app to see how much the spaghetti is, so you can either order something else or split with someone if it's too much. If its too small, you can order something else or do anything you want.

How we built it

First, we developed a 3d shape of a food item on our menu using Niantic’s 8th wall program. Then we used that QR code and uploaded into our HTML user interface, which we had designed to be a menu with multiple items on it. From then, the user just scans the QR code and sees the portions on their camera.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges we ran into was not being able to create enough 3d figures to represent an entire menu of food items. Another challenge we ran into was having the QR code of the 3d figure open up directly to the figure – it always went to the 8th wall website and said our device wasn’t supported.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our 3d image that we developed, as well as our user interface.

What we learned

We learned how to use 8th wall in different scenarios, as well as connecting it to HTML and other language files, and in all, using them for web development.

What's next for AR Menu

Next we would like to create more scaled 3d figures for each menu item, to make it more accessible for different restaurants and customers.
