We created World AR Effect using Spark AR. It utilizes the Instagram back camera to add augmented reality restaurant menus in the environment around the user.

To develop this filter we wrote JS reactive script, which can change a certain amount of 21 values. The rest part of the project was built just using patches. Totally there are about 500 patches and the main challenge was to organize them in a clear and usable construction.

Use Case. This menu helps users discover available dishes in a fun and interactive way. It also helps share their choice with followers.

Usability. After the effect loads, we show the user instructions with call-to-action messages: “Choose your dish by tapping on icon”.

Benefits for business. Restaurants can launch digital promotions with simple mechanics: Share your choice in a story, using our AR-menu Tag our Instagram account Get a guaranteed discount for the dish you have chosen

Scaling: We see big potential to scale these mechanics, by creating customizable effects with selectable features, for example:

  • Customizable effect Choose what world camera effects should be applied by tapping on icons from the menu (weather effects, retro film effects, sound effects, particles) Hide menu, when you’re finished Shoot stories with selected effects combination
  • Tourist guide Choose your location from by tapping on icons in the menu (Houses of Parliament, ‘Big Ben’, Westminster Abbey, site of the British monarch coronations) See effects with information about the location to shoot the perfect story for your followers.

We have also developed an alternative version of this effect with a QR-code that serves as both a link for the effect and a target tracker. This way, the owner of the effect can simultaneously communicate the purpose of the effect and how it works.

Use Case. The target tracker version has the potential to fully replace paper menus. A target tracker image can be set on the table or other ordering zone. Users can make their choice, have a fun experience, and a discount, in just a couple of taps.

Usability. Target tracker images serve as both a link to the effect and a target tracker. That is why, minimum user actions are required - just pointing the camera at the image is enough. Benefits for business.

Target tracker version allows for the full replacement of paper menus, helping to raise the environmental responsibility of restaurants.
