Inspiration

I love flying model-sized craft around my room in mixed-reality. I've built a few popular titles like Star Warships, Enterprises, and Magnificent Ships that do just that. Now it's time for something special: airplanes!

What it does

It lets you fly realistic airplanes around your room with small-scale physics. Planes that you can grab, hold, and throw, or even toggle to full-scale for a walk-around view!

How I built it

Unity, C# for code, and Blender for modeling.

Challenges I ran into

The most difficult part was getting flight physics to work right at small-scales and still be fun to play. Controversially: gravity and lift were eliminated because playtesting indicated it was a lot more fun without them. Once planes are in the air and moving, pilots don't think about those forces much, and having them meant planes spent more time on the ground than in the air.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Maintaining 120 FPS at double the render scale! This was hard to pull-off and maintain, but really adds to the realism of flying scale model planes.

What I learned

I'm not alone! A lot of other kids grew-up pretending to fly model planes around their room; now they no longer have to pretend!

What's next for AR Choppers

More planes? High-definition cockpits? The sky's the limit!
