Inspiration
We asked how data centres could support growing demand for digital services while being better neighbours.
AquaShift focuses on cooling-water demand during hot weather and local water restrictions. Our question: can flexible computing be scheduled within community water limits while essential services keep running?
What it does
AquaShift — Community Water Guard is a concept for an AI-assisted planner that recommends when to run non-urgent computing workloads.
Its proposed focus is turning verified local water restrictions and agreed community water commitments into explicit scheduling constraints. It considers water demand, electricity budgets, computing capacity and workload deadlines.
Recommendations explain the trade-offs and require operator approval. An approved community report would show whether water commitments were met, without exposing sensitive operating information.
Benefits for people and the planet
AquaShift aims to reduce avoidable cooling-water consumption and pressure on local water supplies. It pro
