Inspiration

Our sole inspiration sprouted from our yearning to combat the fast-approaching effects climate change has had. Additionally, we also wanted to combat the tons of ocean pollution that can be seen through careless disposal, which ultimately resulted in the accumulation of microplastics as well as mesoplastics. Our robot design, however, was an original thought that we hope to strike an unfamiliar individuals as unique, as we spent a lot of time coming up both both a well-functioning and physically-pleasing design.

What it does

The AquaCleaner collects trash in the ocean and stores it inside the machine. It is able to safely navigate shorelines as well as dive into the water to retrieve debris.

How we built it

We utilized Wix to create our website to better illustrate our goals, challenges, and the product Aquacleaner. Furthermore, we used Adobe PremierePro to help us create a simulation of the potential of our product on the Pacific Ocean.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges we ran into were not knowing how to put things together. At first we had trouble thinking of what product to make. It was after a while that we decided to go with AquaCleaner. However, we were very conflicted with how we were going to design the product. There were multiple versions of it that we ended up discarding.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As we developed and polished our concept of AquaCleaner, we were very happy with the results. Once we finally finished our project, we took a step back to appreciate our work. We believe that our slideshow and website very perfectly encapsulates our hours of work dedicated to AquaCleaner. Furthermore, we are proud that we were able to create a presentation that will allow more people around the world to be more aware of the dangers of ocean pollution. Ultimately, through our journey of AquaCleaner, we are proud to present our research that is shown through both our slides and website.

What we learned

Through our in-depth research of ocean pollution, we discovered that the topic of plastic waste is much more devastating than we originally thought. Prior to research, we were uneducated about the types of plastics, amount of plastic waste, and solutions to this pressing topic. However, as we began to dive into marine pollution, we were able to learn some depressing facts. For example, there are roughly 3 to 11 million tonnes of plastic waste on the seafloor. Moreover, we learned about the UN’s mission statements as we tackled “Life Below Water Goal 14.” In order for our future generations to be happy with our state of global climate, we must take the first steps to responsibly sustain resources for development–whether it be on land or in the sea. We hope that with our innovative AquaCleaner, we bring more awareness to this topic of ocean pollution.

What's next for AquaCleaner

We wish to share this product with our local community that is near the Pacific Ocean. Furthermore, we also hope that the UN might focus on such innovation to strengthen the impact of the 17 Goals and ocean preservation
