Air Quality Notifier

Inspiration

Air pollution is one of the biggest environmental challenges affecting millions of people every day. Many people only realize the air quality has become dangerous after they begin experiencing symptoms. We wanted to build a simple solution that proactively warns users before poor air quality impacts their health, helping them make informed decisions such as staying indoors, wearing a mask, or avoiding outdoor activities.

What We Learned

Throughout this project, we learned how to work with real-time environmental data, process air quality metrics, and trigger instant notifications based on predefined safety thresholds. We also gained experience in building event-driven systems, integrating APIs, and designing a reliable alert workflow that delivers timely notifications to users.

How We Built It

We built an Air Quality Notifier that continuously monitors real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) data from public APIs. The system evaluates pollution levels against health-based thresholds and automatically sends alerts through notifications whenever the air quality becomes unsafe. The application combines real-time data collection, threshold-based analysis, and an automated notification service to ensure users receive immediate warnings.

Challenges We Faced

One of the biggest challenges was handling real-time data reliably while minimizing false alerts. Different data sources may update at different intervals, so we had to design logic that avoids unnecessary notifications while still responding quickly to genuine changes in air quality. We also focused on making the alert system simple, accurate, and easy for users to understand.
