Inspiration

I remember when I finished High School and how lost I was. I recognize myself in all the undergraduates entering tertiary institutions and how eager they are to get an education, but aren't sure where to start. Their panicked posts on social media asking for any guidance and any information reminded me that what might seem obvious to me now is not obvious to someone completely new to the scene, and they deserve to have the road-map I wish I had when I was in their position.

What it does

With features like the APS calculator, career path suggestions based on student's subject combination, and all 26 of South Africa's Universities' prospectus in one place, this website helps undergraduates by equipping them with tools to ease the transition from high school to a tertiary institution by not only familiarizing them with terminology they'll come across during the application process but also doing the heavy-lifting of putting all the relevant information in one place therefore saving them hours of internet surfing to find the results relevant to them. Hopefully it decreases the statistics of students who give up before even applying because they found it too difficult to navigate.

How I built it

I built this with JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.

Challenges I ran into

Finding the sweet spot between being general enough to help as many students as possible but specific enough to help them narrow down their options was challenging. Hence the inclusion of university websites for more information so it is as informative as possible.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I'm proud of being able to keep it concise and informative.

What I learned

I learned that more words does not necessarily mean more information. Clarity matters more.

What's next for APS-calculator

A feature that gets to know each student's natural inclination and interests might be more helpful in helping them be more aligned with a personalized career choice.
