In Cuba, only 400K people can visit the Web unrestricted, whereas 2,600,000 can only send and receive emails. We are a nonprofit, we built a platform to access the web via email, and we currently offer internet over email to more than 35K people in Cuba.
Apretaste is currently giving Internet access to people who never had it before, opening a whole new world to them and changing the way they perceive life. It giving entrepreneur opportunities through our craigslist-style platform, giving them more access to news and information and also to other services like weather, jokes, translation, games, and overall improving their quality of life.
The way it works, our users send a request by email, and our system crawls the Internet, get the information requested and email it back to the user. It is an easy and clever way to put people online exploiting the channels they can access.
Apretaste is helping thousands of people who cannot access the Web in any way before. Do you imagine doing a research with no Wikipedia, or having no idea if there is going to rain or not? That is the current situation in Cuba and that is what we aim to change.
