Inspiration
The Challenge our team chose was UofT’s Engineering challenge. Our goal was to create a hack that Black students interested in STEM can use to access information on programs, scholarships and resources. This can make their undergraduate experience by matching them with eligible scholarships that correspond to their field of interest. By providing Black students with information that can help them secure positions and financial aid, we can use this application to increase the enrollment and retention rate of Engineering students of color, which coincides with NSBE’s mission.
What it does
Creates a user profile given student info Modulates the info and matches them with fitting scholarships based on institution, program, financial need, etc Links to engineering programs and the scholarship database
How we built it
Coding language: Python 3 Web/App Design: Bubble.io (attempted), Python TKinter IDE: Replit, VSCode
Challenges we ran into
Figuring out how to use Cohere API
Getting our code to upload mp4 files as supplementary
A lot of bash library installation issues 😅
Interfacing the Bubble.io app builder with our backend code
Flask backend integration
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The Code itself
What we learned
APIs, Machine Learning, Python libraries
What's next for AppointAlic
Implementing an AI chatbot Including programs and scholarships from more schools, (we focussed on McMaster and UofT for this version) Importing MediaInfo so we can upload MP4 files to convert to text files for program to read Running a similar program to look into potential co-op or internship postings on the internet that may appeal to the user
