Inspiration

In the current climate, job hunting is as difficult as it's ever been. It's common to hear others speak of applying to hundreds of companies and receiving few responses. In fact, many end up stretched thin and burnt out. Ultimately, uncertainty over one's career looms over the heads of many. Applicity is an idea created with a passion for alleviating the pain of many, however much or however little it may be.

What it does

Applicity is intended to have two parts. First, the platform functions as a job tracker and manager. Each job one applies for can be saved with essential information such as company name, company connections, date applied, and company responses. The second aspect of Applicity is its company review feature, meant to promote companies that follow ethical and fair hiring practices and hold the companies with unethical hiring practices accountable. The platform will build a community that provides statistics such as company response time, transparency, and inclusivity. With this, users can spend more time applying for employers that respect them and their time.

How we built it

Applicity runs on the React framework in the front end. It is built with SQL, Node.js, and Express.js for its server. Additionally, we endeavored to build a Chrome extension that automatically collects data from job listings and sends it to the user's job tracking table.

Challenges we ran into

Our team had never made a Chrome extension prior to the project. We discovered how much of a challenge it was to retrieve data from 3rd party websites.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're happy with our design and our front-facing features. Needless to say, it was exciting to see the job tracking table successfully populate with data in an organized manner.

What we learned

Our most significant learning rose out of learning service workers and script injections.

What's next for Applicity

We'd love to expand more upon the reviewing feature of Applicity, where users can share their experience within a company's hiring process and relay it to others. We want to promote transparency and respect among job-seekers.
